One month left until NaNoWriMo! I’m so freakin excited! To prepare, I’ve been reading the official guide for NaNoWriMo, written by the founder Chris Baty. The part I’m at now, is where Baty wants you to write two lists or “Magna Carta”, one written with 10 things you love in books, and one with 10 things you hate in books.
Baty says to put the papers by the place you write, so you are always reminded of what you like. And espacially what you hate. To give you more o a visual, here are my lists:
Magna Carta I: Things in Books I Like
Villains who are human
A little Humor
Unwilling heroes thrust into chaos.
Short to the point books
Magna Carta II: Things in Books I Hate
Any story with Pioneers
Orphan goes to wizard school, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Books that try to hard to be an allegory
Villains that are just evil to be evil.
Inconsistentces in world building.
Using magic to solve everything.
All powerful, invincible heroes.
Negative, after negative, after negative happening to somebody, no wins ever.
Writing what you like is more important than writing what you know. Writing just what you know stifles your imagination. If all you know is Tuna, and you hate Tuna, you don’t have any obligation to write about Tuna. Write what you like to read. Don’t write what you hate.
